Not Golden Route Part 1: Regions to Visit Across Japan

Escape the crowds. Discover 5 amazing destinations outside the Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto loop including Kanazawa, Hokkaido, and Kyushu for a better Japanese experience.

Are you done with the Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto Loop? If you are looking to escape the crowds, you are already part of the top thirty percent of travelers who see beyond the surface.

Right now, seventy percent of visitors never leave Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka. The Golden Route is iconic, but Japan’s must-sees are at a breaking point with overtourism. The best of Japan belongs to those who wander further.

Here are 5 destinations to get you off the Golden Route.

1. Kanazawa: The Samurai Capital

Start in Kanazawa in the Hokuriku region. Often overshadowed by Kyoto, this is the samurai capital. Personally, I enjoyed this 300% more than Kyoto. You get the same historic vibes and beautiful gardens with 90% fewer foreign tourists. It is the perfect blend of culture and tranquility.

2. Chubu: The Kiso Valley and Matsumoto

Next, head to the Chubu region. Here you can walk through history on the Nakasendo trail in the Kiso Valley. Do not miss Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s premier historic castles. The atmosphere is steeped in history, offering a tangible connection to the past.

3. Sendai and Fukushima

Venture into the Tohoku region to see Sendai in Fukushima. A highlight here is Matsushima, widely regarded as one of Japan’s three most scenic views. The coastline is breathtaking and offers a peaceful contrast to the busy streets of the capital.

4. Hokkaido: The Northern Dreamscape

Go North to Hokkaido. This region is a dreamscape and serves as the ultimate winter or summer destination. While there, visit Hakone, Otaru, and Sapporo. Whether you are skiing in winter or exploring the flora in summer, the scale of nature here is unmatched.

5. Kyushu: Food and Vibes

Finally, head to Kyushu. Visit Fukuoka for a city that has Tokyo vibes but with excellent high-end shopping and incredible food culture. From there, it is easy to take day trips to the scenic spots of Itoshima, the relaxing town of Yufuin, or the hot springs of Beppu.

This is part one of the Not Golden Route series. In part two, I will show you 5 more destinations surrounding the Kanto region. And in part three, I am giving you the ultimate list of day trips you can take right from Tokyo.

Happy travels!
